Ficus Tuffi Hedge Spacing Guide
Correct spacing is critical to the success of a Ficus Tuffi hedge. Spacing determines how plants compete for light, root space and nutrients which directly affects hedge density, growth direction and how quickly a continuous screen forms.
Ficus Tuffi performs best when planted close enough to encourage competition rather than allowing each plant to grow independently.

Spacing For Smaller Grades (Up to 1.5m Tall)
For Ficus Tuffi plants 1.5 metres tall or under we recommend planting at 500mm spacings.
At this distance the plants are positioned close enough to:
Compete for light early
Encourage strong vertical growth
Promote lateral branching
Close gaps quickly
This spacing helps smaller plants establish as a single hedge system rather than developing into separate shrubs. The result is a denser hedge that knits together faster and responds better to regular trimming.
Spacing for Larger Grades (1.7–1.8m Tall)
For larger Ficus Tuffi plants, typically 1.7 to 1.8 metres in height, a slightly wider spacing of 700mm is recommended.
These larger grades already have:
Established root systems
Broader canopies
Stronger structural growth
The additional space allows roots to settle without transplant stress while still keeping plants close enough to compete for light and form a unified hedge. This spacing balances early establishment with long term hedge density and stability.
Why Spacing Matters for Ficus Tuffi
If Ficus Tuffi plants are spaced too far apart each plant receives unrestricted light and space. This causes them to:
Grow outward rather than inward
Prioritise individual shape over hedge formation
Take much longer to provide effective screening
Correct spacing encourages plants to grow together, creating a strong, continuous hedge that is easier to shape and maintain over time.
Long Term Results Come From Correct Spacing
Starting with the right spacing reduces long term maintenance issues, improves uniform growth and ensures the hedge responds consistently to trimming. Correct spacing is one of the most effective ways to achieve a clean, dense, long lasting Ficus Tuffi hedge.
